- Education for Development Foundation Scholarship (EDF Scholarship)
Education Development Foundation
Scholarship (EDF Scholarship), known as DARUNEE Scholarship, was firstly
founded in Thailand in 1987 by Mr. Terumasa Akio, founder, when he met a
poor girl named DARUNEE, at the Northeast of Thailand, requested him to
support her to continue her study.
EDF Scholarship, in 1995, was expanded to Lao People’s Democratic
Republic; it has been operated in 4 provinces, 20 districts.
EDF Scholarship, in line with the Government’s policy for education
sector is to provide equitable access and quality improvements in the
provision and delivery of basic for all children at least the first 9
year of schooling by around 2010 and the education for all by 2015, was
expanded to Cambodia in 2003.
This scholarship, during 2003 to 2006, was executed as pilot project by
local non-governmental organization. During that period, the
scholarship was provided to 1,000 students in two provinces: Kampong
Speu (In Tpong and Oral District) and Koh Kong (In Kampong Seila
District).
- The Education for Development Fund Cambodia (EDF-Cambodia)
EDF-Cambodia is a member of EDF
Group that has philosophy education development, poverty reduction and
peace building. EDF Group is consisted of EDF-Japan, EDF-Thailand,
EDF-Lao and EDF-Cambodia; there will be EDF-Myanmar and EDF-Vietnam in
the future.
EDF-Cambodia officially registered at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and International Cooperation in 2008, signed Memorandum of
Understanding (MOU) with Kampong Chhnang Provincial Office of Education,
Youth and Sport in 2008 and made Project Agreement with the Ministry of
Education, Youth and Sport 2010.
EDF-Cambodia, after its establishment, has played important role in
building rural human resource by providing EDF Scholarship to poor rural
students as well as to contribute to the poverty reduction of rural
people. Only past 4 years, 2007-2010, EDF Scholarship was provided to
over 4,000 students. This scholarship enabled over 4,000 students to
complete primary level at grade 4, grade 5 and grade 6 and continued to
lower secondary level.
